ULTRAVERNACULAR!!!
SNAP CRACKLE AND POP FROM THREE POST-MOD HOMEGROWN TROUBADOURS 17 JUNE AT THE WINE CELLAR
THE ULTRAVERNACULAR SHOW with Otis Mace (Auckland singer-songwriter), Gavin Buxton (Ponsonby DCs) (Christchurch singer-songwriter), David Eggleton (Dunedin performance poet) - The Wine Cellar, St Kevin's Arcade, K.Rd, Wed 17 June, 8-10.30 pm
cost $15
Fresh bright irreverent comic takes on life in New Zild. From an apartment block in inner city Auckland Otis Mace brings artfully-constructed comic love ballads and bright pop songs. He has opened for Billy Bragg and the Violent Femmes and never fails to include an element of vivid storytelling in his performance . Albums are on Powertool and Jayrem and Ode and he has toured exstensively overseas … more on Utube, myspace
Out of Christchurch, Gavin Buxton is the laconic voice of The Ponsonby DC’s, whose 1986 single “G’day Mate” topped student radio charts and has since become an icon of alternative kiwi music. When the band’s first album was re-released on CD in 2005 it was included in Listener critic Nick Bollinger’s list of the top ten albums of the year. The Ponsonby DC’s had a studio reunion in 2007 and the subsequent album That’s What all the Girl’s Say received critical acclaim both in NZ and internationally. Buxton’s songs make humorous observations on contemporary NZ life. The Ponsonby DC’s song “Eat Dirt” is currently (June 2009) in the KIWI FM TOP TEN.
Dunedin-based David Eggleton, currently writer-in-residence at the Michael King Writers’ Centre in Devonport, is a dynamic and colourful beatnick bop surrealist ranter, and the comic and astute poet laureate of Kiwiana and Pasifika. His poetry albums include Poetry Demon and Versifier. He is also included on the CD James K.Baxter tribute album Baxter.
